A band that has become a house hold name; known through out the world, as one of the most influential and fulfilled groups to date are The Beatles. Before their album Revolver, The Beatles had already 7 albums under their belt. Many memorable moments that lead up to the recording of Revolver includes the group being appointed by Elizabeth II Members of the Order of the British Empire as well as opening the first major stadium concert in history. Filling up every seat in the arenas they played in, The Beatles were the number one band at the time.
A few non-musical influences on Revolver came from John Lennon’s experience with LSD and Paul McCartney’s interests in the Motown Sound. At the time of recording, Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were experimenting with LSD. A few of the lyrics from “She Said She Said” came from conversations John Lennon had with actor Peter Fonda. The song “Got to Get You into My Life” was influenced by Paul McCartney’s fascination of the Motown Sound describing his song an “ode to pot”. George Harrison also had an extensive contribution to the songwriting of Revolver adding three songs including the first track, “Taxman”.
Some of the innovations that were utilized on Revolver included guitar dubbing and reversing vocals and guitar licks. Guitar overdubs are commonly used by majority of modern day bands. Reversing vocals and guitar takes has come a long way since the use of tape. It was used for a unique effect that continues to carry out today. These creative techniques have paved the way for today’s musical effects and creativity.
In my opinion Revolver hasn’t had much of an impact rather it has showed me how far studio recording has come since the mid-late 60s. This album displays the originality of both The Beatles and producer George Martin by implementing and designing musical ideas we take for granted today.
